Hi everyone and welcome back to my photoshoot tips blog. I am a portrait photographer with a focus in families and couples. In this blog post, I will give my tips for working with couples.

Couple shoots are so fun because every couple is unique. It’s fun to feed off of their energies with one another to create beautiful and intimate shots. Whether it’s engagement photos or just a photo shoot for fun, couples give you a lot to work with – your job is capture their love on camera.

Tip #1

Tip #1: Work with the couple's style

The most important thing to know when working with a couple is their style. Every couple has a certain chemistry and it’s the photographers job to capture that emotion. Some couples are more physical in their affection for one another while others are shy about displaying their romance. Make them feel comfortable just being themselves around you and the camera. The best photos are the most natural ones.

Tip #2

Tip #2: Don't be afraid to give your couple direction

The next tip to working with couples is all about posing. While it’s best to capture natural interactions between the couple, sometimes the photographer should give direction on where the couple should stand or sit. It’s also handy to keep photo references of poses you like.

Using a reference

For this pose, Heather showed me a photo she liked on Pinterest. We then recreated that photo in their style.

Capturing action

I snapped this photo after telling Chris and Amy to spin around while hugging.

Tip #3

Tip #3: Keep it fun!

My last tip for working with couples is to capture fun photos of your couple. Not every photos has to be stylized and posed. It’s always fun to take images that capture the couples doing something goofy or fun. Part of being in a relationship is spending time with the person you love and love to laugh with. Take fun shots of your couples!

For this photo we used the painting on the wall to create the scene. As you can see it looks like the bear is eating Brad’s head. I thought it was a cool picture to snap before the session ended.

I hope these three easy tips will help you on your next photoshoot. Next week, I will give some tips on working in nature and natural light. Also, please make sure to check out my portfolio for more couples photography!
